FIPPA, Open Education (Teacher resources, Creative Commons)…
This week was very informative. I knew nothing, or very little, about the Freedom of Information and protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA). In today’s world, where we rely more and more on our “virtual persona,” we need very clear rules and regulations in order to protect ourselves and our future pupils. What we and our future students put out into the “crazy web” will be there forever and pretty much accessible to anyone, so we must be vigilant and protect ourselves and our students against potential nefarious activities.
Furthermore, we also examined “open education” and the variety of sites and services offering an amazing number of resources for present and future teachers and students. This is going to be an incredible and seemingly bottomless well of resources and ways in which we, as future teachers, could enrich our teachings and also rely on the wealth of expertise from the many amazing teachers who came before us. The fact that something like Creative Commons exists is a very exciting idea for me. It means more accessibility in and out of the classroom. This is amazing! When all members of a society have access to education and educational resources, society itself will be much better and equitable. If we subscribe to the notion that “Knowledge is power,” we can then think of a knowledgeable society as a powerful society. There is many many aspects of our world that need to change in order to further improve our society and education is definitely a very important step, so making it more accessible to all is a wonderful thing. I will definitely be using some of the shared resources outlined this week.
